About Me

Byron Paul Murphy is a Springville, Utah-based orchestra conductor, composer, arranger, and trombonist.

Paul began his musical studies at age 6 on the piano and the trombone at age 12. Later, he attended Snow College’s Horne School of Music, where he earned his Bachelor of Music with an Emphasis in Commercial Music. Here, Paul studied conducting, composition, arranging, and music education as well as other traditional music courses.

Paul studied instrumental conducting with Dr. David Fullmer and Dr. Brent Smith and choral conducting with Dr. Michael Huff. Additionally, he studied trombone and euphonium with Dr. Daniel Bachelder and Dr. Steve Call. During this time, he conducted many Snow College ensembles, including the Snow College Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Badger Pep Band, and Badger Beat in rehearsals and concerts.

In 2019, Paul created a short-term orchestra, the BPM Chamber Orchestra, which he conducted in rehearsals and a recital concert, performing classical works and arrangements of musical theatre songs.

Since graduating from Snow College, Paul has performed in the trombone sections of the Utah Philharmonic Orchestra, American Fork Symphony, Nebo Philharmonic Orchestra, Intermountain Choral Artists & Symphony Orchestra, and the Eagle Mountain Symphony Orchestra.

In recent seasons, Paul has had the opportunity to conduct the Utah Philharmonic Orchestra, and is looking for more opportunities to work with other ensembles and musicians to bring great symphonic music to the communities of Utah.

Currently, Paul is working towards the completion of a Master of Arts in Arts Administration degree, which he plans to complete in August 2024.

Off the podium and when he is not working, Paul cherishes time spent with his family, whether traveling, playing board games, baking, or sitting down with some popcorn for a movie.
